Eighteen thousand books for humble libraries

The district of Comas, with 531,027 inhabitants, is the fourth most populated district of Peru, and one of the forty-three that make up the province of Lima. It should be noted that 57% of the total population of this district is basically concentrated in young towns, recently founded, and in other dispersed human settlements. 12.5% of the population is in a situation of extreme poverty, and the homes are of inadequate characteristics, many of them without basic services such as electricity, water or sanitation.

The Delegation of Culture of the City council of Cabra, conscious that the culture and the reading are indispensable tools for the progress and human development, sent this campaign of collection of books for the libraries of Commas, with the idea that the access to the information , education and entertainment are accessible to all, as recommended by Unesco, and especially for this disadvantaged area of Peru.

The campaign, which could be followed through the Municipal Public Library of Cabra on its Facebook page, can be considered a success of solidarity, as it was able to reach the figure of 19,000 copies collected, and although most of the donations were of individuals and institutions of the Basque Country, there was also no lack of collaboration from other localities and institutions related to culture.

As a climax to the campaign, we thought about holding an event aimed at primary school students in schools in the town, in order to make them share the idea, and to show their solidarity by donating a book by each one of them for the libraries of Comas. The act, organized by the Delegation of Culture of the City council of Cabra, counted on the collaboration of the Council of Culture of the Meeting of Andalusia.

Thus, on Monday, February 12, the play Fríos, blancos y muy quietos, by Inmaculada Díaz, was staged by the Aral company, made up of five professional musicians (violin, flute, viola, cello and double bass) who offered a fusion show of literary, musical and theatrical content, aimed at a child audience and with a very high participatory capacity.
